McCain Iraq, Iran Policies Make Him Favored Candidate to Saudis

Friday, May 16th, 2008

From McCain Source: News | Original Article

John McCain, who is trying to strike a distance from the policies of President George W. Bush, accuses Saudi Arabia of sponsoring insurgents in Iraq and condemns it for human-rights violations, including imprisoning people whose “only crime is to worship God in their own way.''

That should make the prospect of a McCain presidency a nightmare for the Saudi rulers, who have enjoyed close ties to the Bush family. Instead, Saudis are privately rooting for the presumptive Republican nominee, discounting some of his rhetoric because he's the only candidate to promise to keep U.S. troops in Iraq and to deter Iran.

From McCain Source: News | Original Article

Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign is vetting its own staff members’ lobbyist connections—scurrilous or otherwise—after two aides recently left the campaign when questions arose over their prior lobbying work for Myanmar’s military junta.

The Atlantic reported Thursday night that campaign manager Rick Davis, himself a former lobbyist, is asking staffers to disclose any past or current ties to lobbying activity or outside political groups, such as 527s, to be vetted by their legal team in an effort to head off any future embarrassing staff revelations for the Arizona senator. (See Davis’s memo to the McCain staff.)

McCain’s Budget Would Create Largest Deficit In 25 Years, Largest Debt Since WWII

Friday, May 16th, 2008

From McCain Source: News | Original Article

Sen. John McCain promises that, as president, he would “cut taxes and balance the budget.” But his current economic plan would create deficits as deep as 5.7% of GDP by the end of a two term presidency — the highest federal budget deficit in 25 years — and would accumulate the biggest debt since the second World War, according to a new analysis by the Center for American Progress Action Fund. McCain’s current fiscal plan would recklessly exacerbate the fiscal irresponsibility of the Bush Administration further by gutting revenues far below the average level of the past 25 years.

If you're looking for the sort of reaction that reminds one of being hit upside the head with a ball peen hammer, you can't do better than Senator Joe Biden's "This is bullshit." McCain Has Zero Plan to Get Us Out of Mess President Bush Has Created

Friday, May 16th, 2008

From McCain Source: News | Original Article

John McCain revealed today that he has no plan — none — to get us out of the mess the president has created. Senator McCain said that it is important for presidential candidates to "define their objectives and what they plan to achieve not with vague language but with clarity." But especially when it comes to Iraq and Afghanistan, the picture he painted today of where he hopes to be by 2013 is totally divorced from reality and there is zero clarity about how he would get there. It's beyond being vague: John McCain is totally silent about how he would realize his rosy vision for 2013.

John McCain's asked a prominent Republican consultant, Craig Shirley, to leave his official campaign role Thursday after a Politico inquiry about Shirley's dual role consulting for the campaign and for an independent 527 group opposing the Democratic presidential candidates. The campaign also released a new conflict-of-interest policy barring such arrangements.

Shirley, a conservative public relations veteran, doubled as a consultant to McCain and to Stop Her Now, a 527 group barred from coordinating its activities with presidential campaigns. He is not currently on the McCain campaign’s payroll but will also step down from his role on McCain’s Virginia Leadership Team said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.
